Looking for a good web hosting service is so difficult these days, with the tons of offers and the emergence of new companies with very low prices. But the more variety you get, the more confusing it could be. Thats why its important to see what customers of these companies have to say out of their experience with those hosting companies.

Personally, I’ve been with many hosts before, but I’ve settled for PowWeb.
That company really offers outstanding service. They use their own unique ‘load balancing technology’, which gives zero downtime. Their servers’ specs are so powerful: all are Dell servers: using dual P4 3.05GH processors, with massive 8Gigs of DDR ram, giving your website outstanding speed and stability. Unlike most hosting companies, powweb runs its own data center, wit tier 1 connection, using latest BGP 4 technology, which means multiple bandwidth providers, so you are sure your website always gets the fastest network connection speed, and automatically switching networks in the event of any one’s being down. Their support is also exceptional. The thing I like to use the most is their forum. They have the largest community in the hosting industry. Once you post any question, you get loads of help from moderators, tech guys, and other customers too. Users are so friendly, you can actually ask them for anything, even if not directly related to the hosting service, like when you need coding help, or software-related issues. Their forum are live and crowded all the time, with an average of 500 users simaltaniously online. This results in speedy replies, you’d feel its like chatting. Speaking of chatting, they also have online live support most of the time. Their email support is also very friendly, and can work with you in just about any problem you may face. They also have their toll free phone support number. Powweb is one of the world’s top 5 hosting companies. Thy started business back in 1999, and they have currently over 60,000 satisfied customers.

They welcome Islamic web sites. They only sell one plan, PowValue. Maybe that’s the reason why they can manage it so well and become one of the most popular web hosting companies in the world.

One of the many reasons behind their success is that their plan includes most of the important features needed for small business. Apart from the huge disk space, bandwidth and 5 MySQL database, you’ll also get built-in shopping cart, SSL, website builder and other promotion tools to jump start your internet business. With BGP4 technology, PowWeb is multi-homed to Tier 1 backbone providers for the best routing and redundancy. Currently, they have 2 Gigabit feeds provided by InterNap and Verio. Their routers are made redundant through the use of VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol). Their “Clustering/Load Balancing” of servers is not only fault tolerant, it eliminates all single points of failure allowing them to give you superior performance. PowWeb provides one of the best uptime for their customers in the web hosting industry.

Their servers are connected to the internet at high speed. Their backbone includes high speed OC12/48 connection for efficient and reliable high-speed performance.

When you sign up with them, you get a huge 2000MB of hosting space, with 150GB of bandwidth (monthly transfer rate), for just $7.77 per month. As if that is not cheap enough, they also give you a free domain name for one year! and 2 month free of hosting. You need to pay them yearly to get the above offers though, in which case, they dont charge you for any setup fee.

So, I totally recommend them for anyone looking for a reliable host.

  1. I have just made my 4th phone call to Powweb in a week, and I must say I have never dealt with a company so unresponsive and unco-operative, a hosting company or not. The trouble started when a 20$ “pointer fee” for a new domain to be used in the future. I had 5 websites currently hosted with Powweb for 5 months, I had pre-payed when signing up for the plan to the tune of 12 months. At the time I was weary of pre-paying, although the reviews I read online eased my worries and I happily coughed up for 12 month. Bad mistake.

I received an email from one of my clients worried her website was down, so I placed a phone call to Powweb at 9:30am. I was “Caller #5” when connected. 2 hours later, I was “Caller #3”. As I had speaker phone, I kept working away trying to figure out what had happened, and kept waiting for a rep. An additional 2 hours later, I was now “Caller #1”. I had never endured a 4 hour wait time with any company, although I needed this site (as well as the others) back up ASAP, so I continued waiting. 2 MORE HOURS and i had now been on-hold for over 6 hours. I was glued to my desk with the faint hope I would soon be talking to a rep, my entire day shot.

Finally, as the phone counter reached nearly 6 and a half hours, I couldn’t justify waiting any longer and hung up. Yes, after nearly 7 hours I had given up.

This brings us to today, another attempt to contact support with Powweb. This time, my call was answered in under an hour. Hooray Powweb. I was informed that because of the “pointer fee” for my new domain being unpaid, all websites in my package had been disabled, and then, after 7 days every site and all data associated was erased. I was then told to hold for billing, to see if there was anything they could do for me. Suddenly, I was cut off. Called back, shuffled through 2 reps, finally back to the first rep. Put on hold again, was sent back to the calling queue, to wait to be shuffled through reps once again.

Finally, I get placed on to the billing call queue, where I wait, and wait, and wait… and then someone picks up. I fill the rep in on my situation and that because of the entire mess I would like to receive some kind of retribution for my troubles in this fiasco. I was preparing myself for another “Please hold”, in which I would endure another wait and, hopefully speak with a supervisor, explain my issues and, in the end, hopefully receive something to make my time and aggravation worthwhile. “You can write an email to [email protected] sir.” An email? That is how this horror story ends? So, instead of writing to an email address that I can only imagine what type of computer generated response I would receive, I am posting my experience to the web, in hopes that others may be able to steer clear of the stress, aggravation and lost time I have had to endure through hosting with Powweb.

  2. In regards to http://www.chronicfitness.com I finally found that powweb was the problem for the connection delays. I was getting load times between 3 and 11 seconds. I switched over to shared hosting on verio and now I get all under 1 second load times. I’m really happy I made the move. Hope this helps someone out.

    Peace

  3. So i`m not the only one with these problems. Read the TOS aggrements. There is a limit on the amount of requests also with powweb per hour. I recently reached this limit and had my site disabled for 16 hours. Now in one respect I Paid for 32000 requests an hour. In fairness you would think they would disable the site for 1 hour then reenable it for the next. But nooooo They decide to monotinize your main domain traffic with their friggin advertising. Another con. Better Business bureau me thinks…

so be careful if your a medium to big player as this hosting package just will not do. 300 gig month lol whats the point based on 32000 requests an hour.

    Hope this helps

PS If you have the cash go with EV1servers. Worth the price and least hassle

  4. Thats why I left powweb long ago. I went to site5, and it was like discovering a treasure box. Site5 is amazing. Guess what they did when they found that my sites are getting too many requests per hour? they moved me to a much less populated server, which gave me much more server resources. What’s amazing is that they charged me nothing extra. So, while greedy companies like powweb tries to get rid of their successful webmasters (and let only the amatuer ones who never use even 10% of what their hosting plans entitles them), site5 allows you to really, I mean really, use all your plan limits. They do not punish you because your sites are successful.

  6. Hi there, I find it quite refreshing to occasionally find a good blog such as yours with a different topic completely. It somehow ads to ones little list of lifes experiences. I seem to have a soft spot for blogs related to Hosting provider sql web and /or sites that have a central theme around submit articles type items. I guess this comes from being a webmaster as well. Thank you and I hope you don’t mind if I visit again next month.

  8. Too bad about the bad experiences with Powweb. I have had at least 7 hosts over the last 10 years and so far Powweb has been the cheapest and the best.

The customer service has been helpful and accesible, with 24 hour (very helpful) live chat team and an almost no-wait phone system.

Our main site gets 1/2 million hits a month, and we run close to a dozen other sites from one account. So far we have only experienced one brief interuption of service and almost no speed or access issues.

Besides the usual webspace/pop email accounts/database access options, they provide one step installation of dozens of popular software, from PHPnuke to Mambo to Image Galleries to simple form scripts.

So far, two years in, all is good.

    Good luck.

  9. I would have to say if that were my situation I would also agree, but it is not my current situation. The last post leading up to this one would be the same answer in my humble opinion. Great site and keep the nice content coming
