how to move Google Chrome profile or create multiple profiles

Google Chrome installs itself in your C drive, or whereever it finds your operating system. It does not give you the option to choose where to install it. This is a bad thing, because, whenever you need to reformat your C drive or install a fresh operating system, all your bookmarks and preferences will be erased, together with all your favorite extensions. So, a wise thing to do is to move your Chrome profile to another drive partition. Here is how

In Windows 7: the location of your profile is:

C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
replace “user_name” with your actual username

Now copy the “default” folder

then go to the other drive partition, create a new folder and name it: ChromeProfiles

then paste the default folder inside that folder, and rename it to your own username.

Now all you need is to create a new shortcut for Chrome which has an added instuction to use the new profile location. Here is how

Right-click anywhere in the desktop, and select: New > shortcut

in the location, type

C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe –user-data-dir=”D:\ChromeProfiles\your_name_here”

You can also create as much more profiles as you wish. For example, you can create a new profle for each of your family members. Just create new shortcuts, with each ending with the name of your family member

There is no need to create folders for each of them. When they click their shortcuts for the first time, Chrome will create their new profiles for them, in the location you typed in their shortcuts

I suggest you name each shortcut after each of your family members’ names. You can also change each icon so that they would be easier to recognize
